About

Different Strokes is a Sydney-based club that was formed in 2008, with the aim of providing a social and fitness-focused sporting outlet for the LGBTQI+ community, as well as their friends, family and supporters.

After years of continuous improvement, we are positioning ourselves as more than just a social club. Our race crews have continued to raise the bar at regattas, with wins and placings in finals, as well as member representation at both the state and Australian level.

Our club’s strongest asset is our team spirit. We paddle with a collective determination to challenge stereotypes with our successes, showcase diversity by increasing our visibility, and spark positive change through our actions.

Club history

Since 2008, we have grown from a modest 10 members at the start of the 2009/2010 season, to over 80 members today. This growth has seen us become one of the largest clubs in Australia, with representatives in the NSW and Australian teams.

Our love of the sport has seen us develop our competitive edge, as well as our social spirit. Our performance has improved and we have started achieving gold medal moments in state, national and international regattas. Our float entry in the Mardi Gras Parade every year has seen us march and dance united, to promote equality, break stereotypes and encourage positive change.

Awards

This enthusiasm has made us the enormously proud recipient of the 2010 ‘Club of the Year’ award from Dragon Boats NSW.
